A cast floor is a sleek, seamless and modern floor finish. The floor gets its name from the way it is applied. Cast floors are primarily made of plastic. This can be epoxy or polyurethane (PU). A screed system consists of several layers, depending on the type and application. But what products does a screed consist of? In this blog, we focus on the EPI Superbase screed.
The Superbase and Corestone Nature are both popular EPI cast floors. The Superbase is a sleek and smooth floor, while the Corestone Nature is a more rugged concrete-look floor. Both floors have a different system structure and consist of 4 or more layers.
As standard, the construction of the EPI Superbase PU screed consists of a primer layer, scraper layer, screed layer and paint layer. These are applied layer after layer. Depending on the requirements and application, there is a variation in the layers and the screed can be applied to different substrates.
The primer coat is the first layer of a floor application. This layer ensures that the screed adheres well to the surface and that the screed does not sink.
A scraper coat is applied over the primer coat on concrete or sand cement screed substrates to level. This layer also serves to make substrates liquid-proof, such as for chemical resistance.
The screed layer contains the desired color. This can be solid color (one color) or blend versions (two mixed colors). Depending on the finish, this layer can be topped with flakes or other sprinkles.
The coating protects the screed. The layer makes the screed waterproof, UV-resistant and scratch-resistant. Anti-slip and matting can be added to the paint coat as additional properties.
For each sector or industry, the construction of a screed is different. For example, functional and industrial floors must be able to withstand heavy loads and high levels of wear and tear, while this applies to design floors in homes and offices to a lesser extent. In the food or chemical industry, safety regarding products and workers is very important. Therefore, for example, more stringent regulatory and legislative requirements apply. The composition of components of the floor application depends on the functional use and set requirements.
