Environmental\u00a0Product\u00a0Declarations\u00a0(EPDs) are\u00a0becoming\u00a0increasingly\u00a0important in\u00a0the\u00a0construction\u00a0sector. As\u00a0sustainability\u00a0targets\u00a0become\u00a0more\u00a0ambitious\u00a0and\u00a0assessment\u00a0methods\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0MPG\u00a0gain\u00a0importance,\u00a0the\u00a0demand\u00a0for\u00a0reliable\u00a0environmental\u00a0data\u00a0for\u00a0material\u00a0selection\u00a0continues\u00a0to\u00a0grow.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Yet\u00a0for\u00a0flooring\u00a0systems,\u00a0an\u00a0EPD\u00a0for\u00a0a single product does\u00a0not\u00a0provide\u00a0the\u00a0full picture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A resin\u00a0flooring\u00a0system\u00a0consists\u00a0of multiple\u00a0layers,\u00a0such\u00a0as a bonding\u00a0layer, scratch coat, resin\u00a0layer\u00a0and\u00a0topcoat.\u00a0Together, these\u00a0determine\u00a0both\u00a0the\u00a0final\u00a0performance\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0environmental\u00a0impact of\u00a0the\u00a0floor.\u00a0Anyone\u00a0who\u00a0wants\u00a0to\u00a0assess\u00a0the\u00a0impact of a floor\u00a0properly\u00a0must\u00a0therefore\u00a0look\u00a0beyond\u00a0product level\u00a0alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Many\u00a0EPDs\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0market are\u00a0prepared\u00a0for\u00a0individual\u00a0products.\u00a0That\u00a0information is\u00a0valuable, but\u00a0it\u00a0only\u00a0tells\u00a0part of\u00a0the\u00a0story.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In\u00a0practice, a floor is\u00a0not\u00a0built up\u00a0from\u00a0a single product, but\u00a0from\u00a0multiple\u00a0products\u00a0that\u00a0together\u00a0form a complete\u00a0flooring\u00a0system. A system EPD\u00a0calculates\u00a0the\u00a0environmental\u00a0impact of\u00a0the\u00a0full floor\u00a0build-up per square\u00a0metre,\u00a0including\u00a0all\u00a0layers\u00a0required\u00a0to\u00a0realise\u00a0the\u00a0system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This\u00a0makes\u00a0system\u00a0EPDs\u00a0more relevant\u00a0for\u00a0design,\u00a0specification\u00a0and\u00a0sustainability\u00a0assessments. Many\u00a0EPDs\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0market are model\u00a0EPDs,\u00a0based\u00a0on\u00a0generic\u00a0formulations\u00a0and\u00a0industry\u00a0averages.\u00a0While\u00a0these\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0useful\u00a0as a\u00a0reference,\u00a0they\u00a0do\u00a0not\u00a0always\u00a0say\u00a0enough\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0actual\u00a0environmental\u00a0performance of a\u00a0specific\u00a0product\u00a0within\u00a0a\u00a0flooring\u00a0system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That\u00a0is\u00a0why\u00a0EPI\u00a0deliberately\u00a0chooses\u00a0product-specific\u00a0data,\u00a0based\u00a0on\u00a0externally\u00a0verified\u00a0data\u00a0for\u00a0each\u00a0raw\u00a0material\u00a0and\u00a0each\u00a0product. For\u00a0EPI\u2019s\u00a0EPDs,\u00a0raw\u00a0materials,\u00a0production\u00a0processes\u00a0and\u00a0transport\u00a0flows\u00a0have been\u00a0analysed\u00a0separately\u00a0for\u00a0each\u00a0product in a Life\u00a0Cycle\u00a0Assessment.\u00a0This\u00a0creates\u00a0an\u00a0objective, product-specific\u00a0basis\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0system\u00a0EPDs,\u00a0rather\u00a0than\u00a0a\u00a0generic\u00a0picture\u00a0based\u00a0on\u00a0averages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These product-specific\u00a0analyses\u00a0also\u00a0form\u00a0the\u00a0basis of\u00a0the\u00a0system\u00a0EPDs.
